OnlineTool A vehicle may have the required equipment and software but still need permission to use a function. In BMW systems, this permission can take the form of an FSC. A navigation system may, for example, need a code for particular maps.
FSC appears in different jobs: restoring functions after a unit replacement, updating maps and working with certain engine functions. Understand the code's purpose before choosing the result you need.
What FSC means
FSC comes from the German Freischaltcode, meaning an authorisation or activation code. It grants permission for a particular function.
Programming writes software to a unit. Coding sets it up for the vehicle's configuration. Applying an FSC provides permission that the unit checks for the relevant function.
Installing new maps transfers navigation data to the head unit — the unit responsible for multimedia and navigation. If the maps require a separate FSC, installing the data does not replace that permission.
An FSC is intended for a particular system, task and vehicle. A navigation code cannot replace an engine control unit permission. Even one type of function may use different codes: the installed unit and the conditions of use matter.
Why an FSC can be a string or a file
The word “code” may suggest a string typed into a screen. Some navigation systems work that way. Others use an FSC file applied through a program.
The procedure depends on the head unit. For example, NBT and ENTRY systems have a procedure for entering a 20-character code through iDrive during map installation. NBT Evo and MGU use a different loading procedure without that manual entry in iDrive. These are examples of different systems, not a method for every BMW.
A factory set includes accompanying files as well as FSC. The relevant navigation codes also include a PDF document. Not every file is intended for manual entry into the vehicle. Its purpose determines how it is applied.
What a factory FSC set is for
A factory set contains the available FSC associated with a particular VIN, the vehicle identification number. It may be needed to restore permissions during a repair or unit replacement.
After a head unit replacement, restoring previously available functions requires the corresponding permissions. Acquiring a new function is a separate job: an existing factory set does not by itself grant a new permission.
The service retrieves available factory FSC by VIN. The contents depend on the vehicle and the records found. Check whether the received set contains the code needed for the job. Receiving files does not mean that the function has been restored in the car.
Factory FSC and map updates
A factory set does not authorise every future map version. A permission has its own conditions, and the chosen maps must meet them. If an existing permission covers the new version, another code may not be needed. Otherwise, the corresponding permission is required.
If the maps in a replacement head unit are newer than those authorised for the vehicle, first establish which map version the existing code permits. Then use appropriate maps or obtain permission for the new version.
Retrieving a factory set by VIN and obtaining a code for a selected map update are different tasks. The factory FSC service returns the codes found; it does not select a new code for any arbitrary map version.
What FSC DME means
DME is the engine control unit. The FSC DME offering prepares one FSC file for the specified VIN and one selected item.
Each item has an AppID, an identifier distinguishing the code's purpose. The list shows a number such as 0x017C alongside the function and unit variant. Read them together.

1CR is the remote start option, while 0x017C and 0x0180 identify different FSC for it. The equipment option and the permission identifier have different roles. The installed DME determines the choice.
In the third row, DME-86T0 identifies the unit variant and S58B30T0 the engine variant. These distinguish it from codes for other configurations.
Other item names also refer to specific functions and unit variants. “Competition” in a name does not mean that the file itself changes engine power or turns the car into another model.
This FSC DME option is not a factory solution. The order prepares a file; installation is separate. It does not purchase an official BMW ConnectedDrive option. Before ordering, establish the appropriate unit variant and whether the code can be applied to its software. VIN alone does not establish compatibility. The code may stop working after a software update.
Example: working with a received FSC
For a repair using a factory set, save the files with a note of the vehicle and job. Find the data for the required function. A navigation code and another unit's code serve different purposes even if they share a VIN.
E-Sys 25.10.01 provides FSC Editor for viewing FSC files. Open a file with … or through File → Open. Its values appear as a tree. You can inspect the file without writing it to the vehicle or changing its contents.
Applying it to a unit is a separate step. In the FSC module, Write FSC writes the selected file, Update FSC checks and activates the written code, and Poll FSC State queries its state in the unit. Writing and activation are separate: a write confirmation alone does not show that the permission is in use.
These are explanations of program actions, not a universal sequence for every unit. Applying a code requires the correct parameters for the system. An FSC DME file cannot be assumed suitable for every action merely because it is called FSC.
After the relevant procedure, check the code's state and the function in the vehicle. When restoring navigation, confirm that the required maps are available and navigation works. If the code is rejected, keep the exact program message, unit details and file purpose for investigation.
Obtain factory FSC
Use the complete VIN to retrieve available factory codes. Check that the result includes the permission needed for the function and map version.
